John Varney

35 year career in Broadcasting, starting with engineering, then creative roles. Currently non-exec director of a plc, Chair of Ofcom Advisory Committee, Governor at Manchester Metropolitan University and incoming Chair of Silk Heritage Trust. John also invests in early stage digital businesses. John is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts and a Fellow of the Royal Television Society.




  Moved to Granada in 1995 and became Group Technology Director. Chair of technical launch board for digital TV then led to post of Global Chief Technology Officer at BBC.

  In 2006, founded a technology and transformation consultancy, so he is very familiar with the challenges of starting a business later in life. In 2007, he also became CEO of a Silicon Valley start-up, funded by Venture Capital.

  The last 10 years has been spent consulting on impacts of digital technology and behaviours, with a particular interest in local government, having advised several city councils in London and a spell as interim Chief Information Officer at Essex County Council.
