Enterprising Macclesfield ended a successful 2016 by celebrating its First Anniversary Event in December. The initiative was originally launched by the Make it Macclesfield team, in order to provide free advice and valuable support to anyone in the local area wanting to set up or grow their own social or commercial enterprise. Since its launch, Enterprising Macclesfield has gone from strength to strength, making local businesses thrive in the SK10/11 area.
The event which was held at the Silk Heritage Centre was attended by clients, coaches, local advisory partners and members of the Macclesfield community. The Mayor of Bollington – Allan Williams, also attended.
During the event, key achievements and successes of the first year were shared. The highlights included Enterprising Macclesfield helping over 70 local enterprises, 55% of these being established businesses. A pool of 14 coaches and 15 local advisory partners was also formed, providing 168 man days of support.
Success stories were then shared from the last twelve months in the form of a panel discussion which was hosted by Heather Self, one of Enterprising Macclesfield’s review panel members. The discussion included local advisory partner – Gareth White and coach – Philip Cole, as well as two Enterprising Macclesfield clients, James Wood from Totally Wild UK and Alex Heylings from Nova Commercial Finance.
James approached Enterprising Macclesfield with the idea of buying his own woodland and creating a forest school for local children. The coaching sessions helped James develop an alternative business model that involved running wild food foraging workshops and cooking demonstrations. James is now running his business successful and producing wild food products for high end restaurants in the north west region. He has also been featured on the BBC, ITV and in the RHS Tatton Show.
Alex Heylings contacted Enterprising Macclesfield for help with the marketing of his recently established independent finance brokerage. As a result of the advisory sessions, he was able to avoid some unnecessary costs by redirecting his marketing expenditure and adopting a more targeted approach. Recognising the value of the support, Alex has now become an Enterprising Macclesfield local advisory partner and review panel member, offering advice to other local businesses that are in need of support.
Tim Shercliff – Chairman of Enterprising Macclesfield, closed the event by sharing plans and ambitions for 2017. Enterprising Macclesfield is aiming for another successful year, continuing to provide expert advice to local businesses.
